Just in from Ghana!!! ..... A strand of 55 silver coin metal Mali squashed bicone beads strung on string which measures approx. 26". Or a strand of 12 beads if you only need a few for a project. The beads are approx. 14-16 mm by 10-12 mm. Please note that these beads are made by hand out of recycled metal and will vary in shape and size within the strand. The string you will receive will be similar to the one you see in the photo but might have some variations. These beads were found for Funky Frog by a Trader in the Koforidua Beads Market, Ghana. These handmade beads are said to be made by melting old silver coins or scrap silver metal and reusing the material. In recent years, these beads are becoming more and more difficult to find as many of the traditional artisans leave the villages in pursuit of new opportunities as well as because of the strife Mali is experiencing. These hollow Mali beads are light-weight and fun to use. I have a standing order with my Traders and one of them found these for me about a year later. Often now these beads are not well made but strands only have a few beads with very slight imperfections. The strands with larger real imperfections were broken up to make the small 12 beads strands. These beads always have a few slight imperfections.. it makes them interesting. -

In Kokofrom there are master Metal Smiths making brass beads and pendants The process these metal smiths are using is the same as their ancestors... back then it was gold now it is any metal they can get their hands on!! Beautiful Lost Wax Brass Elephant Pendants.... handmade for Funky Frog by the Kokofrom guys in Kumasi. When you think of Africa you think of Elephants! "Elephants are highly intelligent animals with complex emotions, feelings, compassion and self-awareness (elephants are one of very few species to recognize themselves in a mirror!). The gestation period of an elephant is 22 months. That's almost 2 years, the longest pregnancy of any mammal! And they are the largest land animal on earth!" New colours in African Recycled Glass Beads ... a whole array of pastel colours ! The beads were created by the innovative Bead Designer, Tet in Ghana, West Africa. These gorgeous beads are hand made using the ancient methods with a fresh and soothing, soft look. This particular strand is in the tones of a dusty rose... Again the photos don't do justice to the almost etheral quality of these beads - a very soft hue. This dusty rose is one of three pinks in the Pastel line. There is another pink which is the same hue but paler. This is a blushing watermelon pink whereas the other is more a pale beauty. The third pink is blush pink. There are 5 sizes in the Pastel Line. These were bought directly from a Bead Trader in Ghana, W. Africa. -
6 beautiful small Brass Sun + Moon Beads. Approximately 12 mm x 20 mm in size. You will receive 6 beads similar to those in the image. These beads are handmade so will vary in size, shape and colour. These beads are made using the labour intensive Lost Wax method where a mould is made of beeswax. This is packed in a muddy mixture with a hole at the top. This whole crucible is heated so the beeswax mould melts and metal that has been melted on another fire is poured in replacing the beeswax! And remember this is done under a scorching sun!! Beautiful Star Pendant handmade of brass in the ancient Lost Wax Method for Funky Frog by the Metal Smiths of Koforidua, Ghana, W. Africa. The Star is 2 3/4" from the tip of loop to tip. $5 each There is a new order of stars that came in. Large and small stars that are a darker brass than these found here. -
A strand of Heishi Silver Metal Spacer Beads found by Funky Frog's Trader in Ghana and probably made in Kenya.These heishi beads are 4 mm strung on raffia 24" long. These beads are great for any project as an added touch. -
12 small Yellow disk shaped spacer Recycled Glass Beads from Ghana strung on string.. Each bead is about 10x3 mm. These beads are hand made so will vary in colour, shape and size. A bead designed and made by TET Beads, Accra, Ghana. The beads are polished smooth and velvety. -
A Contemporary Bodom style Yellow Glass Bead with a silvery blue-grey swirled teardrop inlay made to look like Old Trade Beads. These were found in the Agboblushi Market in Accra ... the trader said they were from Abijhan, Cote d'Ivoire ... they remind me of fimo beads with a soft smooth feel .. the bead is round but squashed about 14x23 mm with a large almost 3mm hole .. the beads are handcrafted so will vary quite a bit in shape, size and pattern. You will receive on that looks like the beads in the photo. $3/bead -

A strand of 74 black Recycled Glass Beads strung on string 21" long. These beads are size 2 (about 7 mm in diameter). The beads are unpolished and natural. Photos don’t do these beads justice as they are translucent so it seems somehow the camera can’t quite catch them! They are handmade so colour, size and shape vary. These recycled glass beads were purchased straight from the small factory which hand crafts them using the methods of their ancestors, from crushing recycled bottles all the way to firing them in a wood burning oven. -

Back by popular demand .... Earth Butter Beads are hand rolled by women from a disadvantaged rural community near Cape Town, South Africa. Desiree designs, glazes and fires the beads in her pottery studio. These colourful beads captured my heart and are amongst the few beads i don't actually go and buy (though it is definitely on my bucket list!)
