A strand of approx. 66 Bauxite Beads strung on raffia 26" long. The beads are a real mix of sizes and shapes. The largest bead is approx. 45 mm around by 15 mm and smallest is about 14 mm x 6 mm. These beads were bought from Traders at Ghana's Bead Markets. These beads are made by the Beadmakers in Akyem Abompe in Ghana where they are handcrafted in a very labour intensive process starting from mining the bauxite from the nearby hills to drilling the holes. Bauxite is a type of aluminum ore. Bauxite Beads are a beautiful mix of Autumn browns ranging from quite a light almost orange brown to a deep rich brown. They give a necklace a natural look and feel. This strand is quite unusual as some of the beads are carved. -

This type of African mask is a Baule mask which is also known as a Goli mask. It is used in tribal dances during harvest festivals, in processions to honour distinguished visitors and at the funerals of important figures. The Baule are farmers who are part of the Akan people, which is one of the largest groups in West Africa. The circular face represents the life-giving force of the sun. This mask is a circle 9 ¾” diameter (with the 'handle' making it 12” in height) Made of wood which is carved and painted. -
One of my favourite places in Ghana is the Kokofrom Cooperative. This is a tiny village with Artisans still practicing methods of making brass figures and brass beads that their ancestors were doing for hundreds of years... This year Funky Frog put in a large order of pendants and beads ... and while we were there we came across some fun Curios ... These are delightful handles have an imprint of a turtle on the round knob which is 1 1/2" across.... There are four handles. -

A beautiful strand of 48 natural Clay Spindle beads from Mali strung on raffia. These beads have a rough earthy feel with geometric designs. There are 22 large bicone beads that vary from 30 - 33 mm and 26 round beads about 19 to 22 mm. The beads are handmade and will vary in shape, patterns and colour. The string you receive is the one in the photo. My affection for these beads dates back to when I first heard that these 'Spindles' actually evolved into the beads they are today because of our avid collectioner's heart (all Beaders have one of those!) Originally these Spindles were actually made to spin cotton but then people started collecting them because they were so beautiful. They became rare .. so some enterprising people started making new ones but more as the beads they are today... They are so beautiful and evoke the country, Africa just by handling them and by the fact that they are made from Africa's earth.
